How and why we support cleaning up oceans and rivers worldwide
Every time we publish a user review of a paddle board, we donate $5 on your behalf to protect our wildlife by cleaning up plastic pollution from oceans and rivers worldwide.
Why clean up plastic pollution?
Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans, primarily from rivers. And the plastic that’s afloat within the oceans isn’t going away by itself.
This plastic has a devastating impact on marine wildlife and ecosystems. Plastics can persist for many decades, continuously degrading into microplastics.
These microplastics can be ingested by wildlife and later enter the human food chain and even end up in our bodies.
Why The Ocean Cleanup?
At 16 years of age, Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, saw more plastic bags than fish when scuba diving in Greece. He thought: “Why can’t we just clean this up?”
This question led him to research the plastic pollution problem for a school project. He learned about plastic accumulating in five large oceanic gyres, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
In 2012, Boyan Slat held a TEDx talk about how to rid the world’s oceans of plastic using technology. The video went viral, and the momentum that followed allowed him to start The Ocean Cleanup.
The Ocean Cleanup is a well-regarded charity. In the past 10 years, they have removed over 8,000,000 kg (17.8m lb) of trash from the oceans and rivers worldwide.
Here’s a video about their impact in 2023…
After many years of research, development, testing, and iteration, The Ocean Cleanup now has technologies to intercept plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean, and technologies to remove the plastic that is already out there—debris that has been building up for decades.

How the donations are used?
The Ocean Cleanup is a registered non-profit in The Netherlands. They are 100% reliant on donations to continue their mission to rid the world’s oceans of plastic waste.
“The power of the crowd is what got The Ocean Cleanup off the ground in the beginning and has been essential to the success of our project ever since – thank you for sharing our goal of clean oceans”
Boyan Slat
Our contribution goal
Our goal at SUP Scout is to publish 1,000 user reviews each year, thereby donating $5,000 each year to help clean up plastic pollution from our oceans and rivers and protect our wildlife.
